These comic books only portray women as people think they should look. They are just used as objects to make the comic book get more readers. When a young boy sees a woman with a short tight top showing her midriff and cleavage, it is almost guaranteed that they are going to buy it--maybe not for the actual comic, but for the pictures. I don’t think that portraying women in that way is appropriate for comics and certainly not in comics for kids. These images just make young boys start to have a certain idea on what they see women should be like or look like.
Because of how women are portrayed and appeared as objects in comics, it can reflect how men/boys treat women in real life. Also, when young girls see these pictures that show how they think women should really be, those girls then get self-conscience about their appearance and constantly struggle to look like the pictures. When girls see that’ that’s what boys fantasize over, that makes them feel the need to look like that too. Considering that people think they need to look like them, I don’t think that these comics are appropriate for a free time activity.
Why should young girls compare themselves to these pictures? Why should women be portrayed as objects? Why should men be allowed to have such fantasies on paper? Even though some people may think it’s harmless and that it is only considered as over exaggerated, others are comparing themselves to those pictures.
